Microplastics in the Ocean: What We Know So Far

Microplastics are now found from surface waters to deep sediments, with impacts still being measured.

Microplastics come from degraded larger plastics, synthetic textiles, tire wear, and industrial sources. They can carry chemical additives and interact with pollutants in complex ways.

Researchers have documented microplastics in plankton, shellfish, fish, and seabirds. The long-term ecological and human-health implications are still being studied, but the presence of these particles across food webs is a strong warning sign.

Effective responses combine upstream prevention with better waste systems. Reducing single-use plastics, improving stormwater filtration, and designing products for circular reuse can significantly reduce future marine contamination.
